originally designed by french architect charlotte perriand in the 1960s, les arcs 1800 ski resort is a classic example of modernist alpine architecture, which made winter sports and leisure activities accessible to the public. for their latest project the team at coudamy has carefully conserved and refurbished one of the apartments, bringing space saving strategies into the compact 19 sqm studio.

the original layout of the studio has been retained by coudamy architectures. the design team has instead given new life to the space with the creation of a ‘flying table.’ as the name suggests, the radical intervention is fitted with a system of pulleys, which lifts the table up into the double height ceiling when it’s not in use. additionally, the table is topped with a translucent surface that, when raised, creates a diffused light.
the furniture pieces that have been introduced by coudamy are designed around a pure and simple geometry. in this way, the additions strike a bold dialogue with perriand’s modernist style. the mezzanine space has also been optimized with a closed double bed and a custom storage unit. overall, the project, which was completed in december 2019, intends to provide more storage and increased versatility to a classic work of architecture.
