low carbon street lamps and participatory furniture
As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games draw near, the spotlight shifts to the design endeavors shaping the event’s infrastructure. Across the Olympic Village, Studio 5•5 has begun to shape the public realm with a system of low-carbon furniture objects — a collaborative initiative that has redefined the vocabulary of lighting poles while setting a precedent for sustainable urban development. 350 lamp poles created from repurposed street lamps and scaffolding tubes sourced from construction sites now illuminate the Village, while a series of inclusive furniture pieces such as benches and podiums encourage sports participation.

studio 5•5 unites urban design and sustainability
The project has been realized in collaboration with the landscape architects of the TER Agency, lighting design agency CONCEPTO, and urban furniture specialists Alexandre Moronnoz and Sineu Graff. Together, they created inclusive public furniture interventions from lighting to seating that adopt a coherent approach to all small and large innovative equipment and road infrastructure. ‘These are the first urban objects symbolizing that it is possible to apply a sustainable design policy, a formidable tool to enable companies and communities to reinvent themselves while considering the challenges of ecological transition,’ notes the Studio 5•5 team.
This project is part of the broader framework of the public space master plan for the Athletes’ Village, of which Studio 5•5 is a part alongside Carlotta Mazzi and Henri Bava of the TER Agency, Egis, the lead contractor for the consortium, on behalf of the Olympic Works Delivery Company SOLIDEO. Beyond the hosting needs for the sporting event, an entire new neighborhood has been created and will be experienced on a daily basis in the ‘legacy’ phase by the residents of Saint-Denis and Saint-Ouen.
