Watches, flip phones and a ring at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024

Samsung has introduced a series of new AI technologies at the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 in Paris. The biannual event held by Samsung Electronics is a platform where they showcase new devices for their consumers, from smartphones to wearable technology. The lineup this year includes the wellness ring, a Paris 2024 Olympic Games edition of its Galaxy Z Flip6, an upgraded Galaxy Z Fold6, two Galaxy watches, and a pair of earbuds. But the star of the show wasn’t entirely the devices. It’s the Galaxy AI, which Samsung puts in place in the upcoming series of devices.

Samsung describes its new Galaxy AI as a real-time assistant. It taps Google’s Gemini app for some of its features, including planning an itinerary, booking accommodations, asking about the landmarks in a city, and giving information to the user about what they see on their device. Then, users who speak different languages can have a real-time conversation using the translations displayed on both device’s screens. Galaxy AI also offers the Sketch to Image feature, so when users draw, they can turn them into images, too. There’s also the Listening mode, where lectures or guides in a foreign language get translated real time into the language the users want to hear.

Samsung devices come with upgraded Galaxy AI

At Samsung Galaxy Unpack 2024, the electronics brand has shown its AI’s Note Assist. It’s a Galaxy AI feature that summarizes and translates voice recordings, writes meeting minutes, and distinguishes up to 10 speakers in the audio clips. At the same time, the PDF Overlay Translation can automatically detect content within PDFs, including graphs and analysis, translate them into text, and display them on top of the app. Those who need to write texts and emails may not need to worry anymore since Chat Assist can correct their grammar mistakes while Composer can help them compose the text they need to send. All of this and more appear on the upcoming Samsung devices.

The entrance of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition comes in time for the Paris 2024 Olympic games and its athletes. Samsung teamed up with the Parisian Men’s Luxury Maison, Berluti, who designed Team France’s official outfits for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony. The Maison styled the yellow colorway of the Olympic Edition, adorned with the Olympic rings and Paralympic agitos in gold. They also created the edition’s Flipsuit Case from Venezia leather, each with a vibrant color mix inspired by the Olympic rings.

Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition for Paris 2024 Games

For the first time in Olympic and Paralympic Games history, Samsung provides the Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition for use on the podium at Paris 2024, so athletes can take their own photos and videos during the ceremonies. On the other hand, non-athlete users can still get a hand of the Galaxy Z Flip6, now with enhanced 3.4-inch Super AMOLED FlexWindow, as Samsung claims. This is the touchscreen outside the smartphone, which can be folded horizontally. Users may add more widgets with the recent version, and what’s new here is the live-changing wallpaper that shifts depending on the time of the day.

The camera’s Auto Zoom feature allows the flip phone to find the ideal framing for a selfie or hands-free shot on its own. It detects the subject and zooms in and out alone, so the user doesn’t need to hold the flip phone. The 50MP wide and 12MP Ultra-wide sensors and cameras work hand-in-hand with Nightography, a feature that can let users take shots and videos in dim lighting with crisp results, Samsung says. Aside from the flip phone, Samsung has also ushered in its recent Galaxy Z Fold6 during the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024. The horizontal-folding smartphone is back, now equipped with the upgraded Galaxy AI.

Together with the features of Galaxy AI mentioned above, the Galaxy Z Fold6 gets an upgrade for those who play games on their smartphones. Samsung says the model comes with a powerful chipset and 1.6x larger vapor chamber for longer gaming with sustained performance. Ray Tracing retains the vivid and lifelike graphics brought to life a 7.6-inch screen with a brighter display of up to 2,600nit. Content creators can also treat the phone as their portable studio with its AI editing services, including ProVisual Engine, Portrait Studio, Photo Assist, and Slow-Mo.

Content creators may need to hear the audio captured in their videos. At Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024, the electronics brand has also unveiled Galaxy Buds3 and Buds3 Pro, a series of earbuds equipped with Galaxy AI. The former is for general use, while the latter is Canal Type for those who want immersive sound experience. They come with two-way speakers and dual amplifiers for clear sounds. They also have a pre-trained model based on machine learning, so they can restore the original voice of the speaker or singer regardless of how noisy the users’ surroundings are. On the sides, there are strips of beam named Blade Lights. They’re touch-enabled, so users can control the device by pinching or swiping up or down the blade for volume, play, or pause.

The earbuds aren’t the only wearable technology that Samsung unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked 2024. They finally brought out the Galaxy Ring along with Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra. The ring, forged in Titanium Grade 5, can monitor the users’ health, sleeping patterns, heart and respiratory rate, and menstrual cycle as they go on about their daily lives or while sleeping. The wearable technology gathers and sends the data to their smartphone, so they’re always on-track with their health. These features show up too in the Galaxy Watch7, a timepiece powered by an AI algorithm that can also detect signs of sleep apnea.

It also comes with a BioActive sensor for accurate readings, as well as Dual-frequency GPS system to help precisely track the users’ location even in dense urban environments. This may be useful in case of emergencies, and the watch can function as a smaller smartphone too with its text, call, ID and wallet features. If monitoring light exercises and activities may not be enough, then extreme sports fans may appreciate the Galaxy Watch Ultra. The timepiece operates up to 500 meters below sea level and up to 9,000 meters high, so users who swim in the ocean or cycle in mountains can still track their health and progress. As of publishing the story, the devices unveiled at Samsung Galaxy Unpack 2024 are available starting late July 2024.
